The Church of Santiago is the principal place of worship for hundreds of Catholics in the area. However, there is currently no dedicated facility nearby where parishioners can celebrate special events such as wedding receptions and baptisms, or organise volunteer and outreach initiatives.
Next to the church stands the Parish Centre (Centro Paroquial D. Marcelino António Maria Franco), which, if renovated, has the potential to become a vibrant communal space for parishioners and the wider community.
The Santiago Community Centre Project Committee — formed by members of both the Portuguese- and English-speaking communities — seeks, under the guidance of Bishop Manuel António Mendes dos Santos and Fr. Miguel Lopes Neto, to transform the Parish Centre into a true home for parish life.
The classrooms will be renovated to allow year-round use by catechism students and parishioners. Planned works include electrical upgrades, new lighting, air-conditioning, plumbing, a small kitchen area, thorough cleaning and repainting, the purchase of new classroom equipment and supplies, and the installation of WiFi.
The courtyard will be transformed into a welcoming communal and event space for parishioners and the wider community. Planned improvements include new paving and stonework, the installation of an events tent, tables, chairs, and lighting, the addition of a fountain, raised flower beds and potted plants, as well as painting and repair work to the surrounding walls.
Renovations are expected to begin in November 2025, and your support will be a true blessing — any contribution, big or small, will make a meaningful difference. So far, we have already reached more than half of our €36,000 goal.
Gratefully received at the Parish Office.
Once the preliminary renovations of the Parish Centre are complete, and parishioners can begin making use of the classrooms and courtyard, our hope is to move forward with more extensive works — including the remodelling of the west-side building and upgrading the bathroom facilities.
These improvements have the potential to help the parish of Tavira generate additional income by renting the space to individuals or groups seeking an outdoor event venue, while also providing a place for the wider community to benefit from future outreach initiatives.
Your continued support — through prayers, volunteering, or financial contributions — will be a true blessing for the ongoing success of this project.
